Father José María Morelos y Pavón continues to fight for Mexico’s’ independence. Named Chief of the South by Father Miguel Hidalgo, Morelos takes control of the main squares of Oaxaca and Acapulco. After the signing of the Constitution of Apatzingán, Mexico’s first republican constitution, the insurgents, under the leadership of Morelos, experience various defeats. Morelos is eventually captured by the Spanish army and sentenced to death. (Morelia International Film Festival)
