During Napoleon's attempted takeover of Haiti, American attorney Robertson must get the signature of island aristocrat Francis in order to settle an estate. She is the fiancee of Korvin, a wealthy plantation owner, and finds her sympathies are with the French rather than the Haitian rebels. Robertson hires Marshall, a rebel leader, to get him through the jungle to find Francis. After they arrive, the situation becomes very dangerous, with the approach of French troops. Robertson and Marshall save Francis as well as her maid, Korvin, and Korvin's son. Francis eventually switches both her political and romantic allegiance, and she ends up falling for Robertson. Lushly photographed in Technicolor, the film is a limited, though entertaining, adaptation of the epic novel by Kenneth Roberts. Robertson is appropriately dashing in the lead, though Francis seems too young for her role. The final sequences are especially well put together and very exciting. (oficjalny tekst dystrybutora)
