Ferenc, returning home after the World War I, is faced with the prospect of having to start a new life as a widower. His compatriot and POW mates, Rókus died. Ferenc has a horrific secret and a bad conscience: he is responsible for the death of Rókus, who died of hunger because Ferenc did not share his last piece of bread with him. Hi is encouraged by Szüle to marry Rókus's widow, Etel in his child's interst and for the land. The woman is attracted to him, they get married, they both are happy. A baby is born. The children are bringing up together. When Ferenc's own child, Péterke, drowns into the bog while reaching out his hand for a piece of bread, the man can no longer keep his secret to himself: he makes a confession to his wife about his sin. Etel goes insane and later becoming the victim of a sect of religious fanatics, she commits suicide. A news reaches Ferenc that Rókus is alive in Russia. However, he has no intention of returning home. Ferenc has to face his own destiny, which is having to bring up their child and Rókus's orphan alone. (oficjalny tekst dystrybutora)
