In Chinese-speaking countries, not to mention elsewhere, the term "leftover woman" has been a hot topic in recent years. China has taken a hard line on single women in their 30s, basing a whole range of romantic comedies on them. The Last Women Standing is one of the more successful examples, but also a bit subversive, poking gentle fun at the conventional wisdom of self-appointed matriarchs. Like so many other romance films, it works under the assumption that women should and want to get married, because for all their education and career goals, their greatest longing is to find a well-to-do husband. But "Good things come to those who wait" doesn't always apply to a fed-up bachelorette. What would you do – snap up the established, respectable doctor picked out by your mother, or wait and see how things pan out with your inconveniently handsome, irresistible and unbeatable colleague? Add leads Shu Qi (The Assassin, If You Are the One) and Eddie Peng (You Are the Apple of My Eye, Unbeatable) and you've got a guilt-free dessert that's worth the wait. (Art Film Fest)
