Æon Flux

It's got some good ideas (the smart balls reacting to whistles amused me), visually it's not completely futile either (very nice sets at times), and Charlize, who could probably do with rainbow-coloured jeans, is a pretty sight to behold. But that's about all that's worth mentioning. The story is terribly stupid, the action is uninteresting and there is not a single moment in the whole film that you would be willing to watch again. The seemingly charismatic Marton Csokas clearly has a limited acting range, he's good at villains, but I don't trust him as a "good guy" at all, and why an actor like Frances McDormand wandered in for those few shots is really a mystery to me. So the truth is that so far all the movies with comic book action heroines are getting their asses kicked cinematically, artistically and commercially, Catwoman and Elektra can tell you about that. This comic adaptation lacks logic and the plot is too simple. It tries in vain to hide behind the cool visual coat of a long music video, which loses its impact after only a few minutes due to confusing editing and routine camerawork. A big budget doesn't make a good film, and the polished city of 2415 feels too cold and the costumes seem to have fallen out of a more extravagant boutique of contemporary fashion rather than reflecting the times. It's unfortunate that Charlize Theron successfully reaches for the title of the silver screen's sexiest comic book heroine and that Marton Csokas will one day be more than just "the guy who fought Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy" if more directors become interested in him, simply because neither of them raises the quality of the film any higher. However, the ending that paraphrases one of the first chapters of the Bible really is quite funny. (05.08.2006)

It's somewhat ironic, but the more money Charlize Theron gets for a film role, the bigger the disaster is. This can practically be said about this entire project, as it is stupid from beginning to end. We start with a bland mythology that is briefly outlined in the first five minutes, it’s massively banal, of course, but the performances and overall visual mess that this film abounds with only exacerbate everything. The action is often on the verge of making you want to turn off the screen, and the script is not worth talking about. It only stands out for Charlize in interesting suits (which aesthetically are completely off) and her hairstyle, which probably used more hairspray than necessary. There have been some interesting comic-book adaptations lately, and I’m lookig forward to Ultraviolet. These two movies, at first glance, seem very similar in their stupidity. (29.03.2008)

I have known about the movie "Aeon Flux" for a long time, but I never got around to watching it. I don't know why, but I had it fixed in my mind that it was directed by Uwe Boll, which is not a person I would seek out twice. I probably confused it with the movie "Bloodrayne". However, that doesn't change the fact that "Aeon Flux" is quite close in terms of quality to the work of the crazy German filmmaker. What needs to be highlighted is the visual aspect and the digital effects, which are quite impressive. What is so-so are the action scenes, sometimes they are excellent, sometimes they are oversimplified and it is clear that it is just a bunch of tricks. What is completely messed up is the execution and direction. In some scenes, it is evident that they didn't bother with logic and simply shot one scene after another. Hands instead of feet are insane, especially when you see how the camera avoids capturing them along with the rest of the body, and when it does, you can see that the actress actually has normal legs. But hey, we wouldn't want money to be wasted on such nonsense, when the viewer can accept that there are actually hands instead of feet, even though it looks different. Sure, the viewer is an intelligent person and can figure it out. But I still feel like the creators are making fools out of us. The plot then focuses on a stupid sci-fi story, which is as original as the thirteenth copy of "The Last Supper". No, I was not impressed by this at all.
