A model and a photographer are abducted into a subterranean chamber of horrors beneath the streets of New York City. Inhabited by a collection of man-eating ghouls, this terrifying micro-society is dubbed, appropriately, "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwelling." As the creatures emerge from New York's sewer and subway system in search of fresh victims, the situation takes on a truly sinister dimension when the involvement of the United States Government is revealed. The name, or rather it’s meaning, hints at a lot more gory fun that what you get in the end, though the last 30 minutes at least are a good example of a typical 80s horror movie. The make-up is very good and the interesting atmosphere builds up together with the number of mutants (i.e. in the last 30 minutes). The acting is not important, and neither is the zero originality of the story – as it’s typical in films like this. It’s a pity that the plans for a Rob Zombie remake seem to have been dropped, he would have done a very good job with the material.

An exemplary 1980s horror B-movie that impresses with good masks (light bulbs instead of eyes!) and a relatively good atmosphere inside a Manhattan sewer. Unfortunately, the camera spends more time at the desk in the office where the characters deal with the mysterious disappearance of people rather than showing us the delicious gore. I’m begging for a remake by R.Z., as this film really does show its age in some moments.
