During a manoeuvre in autumn, 1896, lieutenant Ikerváry György meets Nagy Marika, a young girl, born to a petite bourgeois family and yearning to become an actress. It is love at first sight. Miss Stanczi does her best to make Marika change her mind as she has already picked Szeles Berci, a landowner, to become her future husband. Tongues are wagging and relatives are busy masterminding minor conflicts made serious by a misunderstanding between the lovers, caused by the young man having actually paid for the charity concert that the girl is allowed to perform at. To get her own daughter, Steffy, into a marrying position, Ikerváry's aunt is also busy trying to undo what love has done already, making an effort to get the queen's approval for Ikerváry to be assigned to another place so that he and Marika might have to separate. Steffy, on the other hand, is in love with Szeles Berci. The queen, however, stands by the lovers thanks to Ikerváry's messenger who acts as a go-between, and, rather than assigning Ikerváry to another post, gives her approval to the lovers' marriage.
