W pewnym gospodarstwie pada nagrodzony medalem na wystawie zwierząt cielak należący do farmera Waltera Colby’ego. Weterynarz dr Rack Hansen wysyła do stanowego uniwersytetu próbki krwi do analizy. Kilka dni później pracująca tam dr Diane Ashley przyjeżdża do lecznicy i oświadcza, że zwierzę zostało ukąszone przez pająka, a bezpośrednią przyczyną jego śmierci była ogromna dawka jadu. Sceptyczny Rack jedzie z Diane na farmę Waltera, gdzie na polu znajdują olbrzymie pajęcze gniazdo. Okazuje się, że w okolicy miasteczka żyją niezliczone ilości śmiertelnie jadowitych pajęczaków, przed którymi nie można się ukryć. (HBO)

It is not that I have anything against tarantulas, or suffer from arachnophobia, however I still got rather unpleasant chills down my spine whilst watching this movie. Respect to the actors who had dozens of spiders put all over them. However, if you are sensitive to this issue, and against hurting these furry arthropods, this movie is not for you - few are trampled or run over by cars in the movie. Otherwise, Kingdom of the Spiders works well for a movie of its genre. If you can get past the somewhat slow pacing and the overly literal anti-DDT message, you are in for a fairly decent experience of a horror movie in the end.

Kingdom of the Spiders gets off to a terribly slow start. A dead cow with crap all around. A dead dog with crap all around. A dead bull, more crap. But once the people start bleeding to death and our heroes are trapped in a barricaded barracks, the film picks up the pace. It’s just a shame that they get stuck in it 15 minutes before the closing credits. This workmanlike, adequately directed popcorn “horror” movie in western garb suffers from a predictable screenplay cobbled together from dozens of similar films (e.g. The Birds). As soon as a new character appears on the scene, you know what’s going to happen to them. But you have to give the film credit for one thing: there are a lot of genuinely live tarantulas in it – and the actors catch them in their hands like it’s nothing!
