Veteran Chicago detective Jim Brannigan (John Wayne) is dispatched to London to bring back notorious gangster Ben Larkin (John Vernon), and is assured that the whole operation will run smoothly... However, things don’t go to plan and Brannigan soon finds himself in the crosshairs of Larkin’s thugs. Reluctantly teaming up with by-the-book Commander Swann of Scotland Yard (Richard Attenborough), Brannigan tears through London leaving behind a trail of destruction whilst determined to re-capture Larkin. John just fit into the 70s. Not so much in westerns, although he wasn't bad in those either, but rather in these action crime films. Almost no one would guess he belonged to those 70 years. Moreover, the confrontation of American and English, male and female, works quite well here, not to mention that it's simply fun and the story is not at all dumb.
