Młoda Amerykanka Katie Armstrong (Keri Russell) pisze w Niemczech pracę magisterską na temat przypadku kanibala-zabójcy Olivera Hartwina (Thomas Kretschmann). Hartwin zostawił wiadomość w internecie, że poszukuje osoby, która w miłosnym akcie poświęcenia dałaby się zjeść żywcem... i taką osobę znalazł. Okazał się nią być Simon Grombek (Thomas Huber), homoseksualista noszący w sobie ogromne poczucie winy za samobójczą śmierć własnej matki. Dziewczyna bada sprawę zbrodni, angażuje się coraz mocniej w historię życia kanibala, dotarcie do przyczyn zachowań Hartwina i Grombeka, zrozumienie relacji kata i ofiary staje się jej obsesją. Gubi się we własnych emocjach. W trakcie tych niebezpiecznie wciągających poszukiwań zdobywa taśmę video z zapisem makabrycznego ceremoniału, nagraną przez samego Hartwina. If you don’t need to see a guy cut off another guy’s penis, fry it up in a pan and bring it to the table, where it is the main course of a candle-lit dinner with the castrated victim, then don’t watch this. It’s no “aesthetic Ridley Scott”. Grimm Love peers into the psyche of the cannibal and his victim in a dignified way, with high-quality actors in the right kind of dark and gloomy visuals and without gratuitous exploitation scenes. In the end, however, it doesn’t resolve anything and even the protagonist, who wanted to find answers to difficult questions, merely cries and becomes disconcerted. What purpose does this serve?

It’s not horror, it’s not suspense or even a thriller, it’s a drama; a very slow and lengthy drama. Technically, there’s hardly anything to complain about, this is something that will either suit your mood or it won’t. It didn’t suit mine.
