Andrius and Liuka mature enough to love each other. They have an unusual bonding full of childlike directness. Andrius had been saving up for a cow to woo Lucy since he was young. And when he finally succeeds, her father, a wandering shoemaker, is fundamentally opposed. So them chasing each other around the meadow and swimming in the pond, and then drying off under a blanket, just makes you want to cry. My second encounter with Lithuanian creations featuring live acting was painless, but it’s too bad that the language barrier is practically insoluble and the local awareness of all Union cinema is quite poor.
