Osadzony w realiach roku 1987 film opowiada historię Claireece „Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) – osamotnionej szesnastolatki, po raz drugi w ciąży z ciągle nieobecnym ojcem, wykorzystywanej przez okrutną matkę (Mo’Nique). Szkoła to istny świat chaosu, w którym Precious udaje się osiągnąć dobre wyniki pomimo skrywanego sekretu – nie potrafi pisać ani czytać. Precious nie poddaje się pomimo trudności. Z pozoru niewzruszona, jest uważnym obserwatorem otaczającego ją świata, pełną ciekawości młodą kobietą z niezachwianym poczuciem, że wszystko, co się zdarza, zdarza się dla niej. Zagrożona wydaleniem otrzymuje szansę przeniesienia do alternatywnej szkoły Each One/Teach One. Dla Precious obce jest pojęcie „alternatywny,” ale instynkt podpowiada jej, że to okazja, na którą czekała. Tam, podczas warsztatów literackich, prowadzonych przez cierpliwą, ale stanowczą panią Rain (Paula Patton), Precious odbywa podróż, która ze świata ciemności, bólu i niemocy prowadzi ją do miłości i pewności siebie. My eyes are wide, my jaw has hit the floor and my brain can hardly believe that something like this is still possible in a civilised society, it’s a pity that it doesn’t quite manage to get to the heart. The problem perhaps is mine, the story is so awful that I didn’t have the courage to get into it. PS: The mother in Precious is one of the most disgusting characters in film, and I’m including Alien and the moth mutant from The X-Files.

Few things are more disgusting to me than blatant depression, and Precious did nothing but give me the first third of it. Everyone is mean, everything is a mess, everything is disgusting. It was only the determined teacher Blue Rain with her program "Each one teach one" who saved the lifeline from collapsing under all that pessimism. But it was definitely not a bad movie. Everyone acts really well, and after everything, I just have to root for the main heroine. However, it's definitely not an exceptionally special event.

This certainly deserves an Oscar. Not even Sarah Connor was such a demonic mother. In the second half, the movie runs out of breath and changes from a harsh social probe into a regular tearjerker (well, not completely regular, but you know what I mean) with a happy ending (ehem... more or less, the movie ends before... doh! I don’t want to drop a spoiler :D). But in places I found it really entertaining. The Hulk-type run-in with the TV, an excellent fight and sometimes some snappy lines that might expect from Joe Hallenback.
