How close can we get to others? Is it possible to live a life completely devoid of love? Can someone, who has experienced what a fragile state of affairs shared happiness is, trust another again? What can be said about life anyway? Some chosen moments from the life of six people living in a huge sprawling conurbation of tower blocks built during the Soviet era. The gently stylised and indifferent world of Autumn Ball is steadily advancing towards winter and will not give any answers to these questions. What this world can demonstrate though is the possibility for laughter even there, where hope has long since become a sparse commodity. Autumn Ball is not exactly a comedy but it will not hurt you to go and see it anyway. (Homeless Bob Production)

I had a feeling that I had already encountered the work of Veiko Õunpuu at some point. This mosaic of desperate human destinies unfolding in a bleak panel housing estate has stuck in my memory so much that even after years, I can easily recall the stories of each character. The most powerful scene was probably the beating of the romantic comedy director by a frustrated porter. Written like this, it may seem like it was all a lot of laughing, but watching the movie was actually a thoroughly depressing experience. However, there were a few moments of black humor in there.
