How could anyone have done something so irreverent and absurd? This is what everyone is asking after an extraordinary discovery in the library of Bologna university. The investigation into the bizarre deed leads to a young but respected professor. But he has disappeared from the city, burning all his bridges behind him. Taking nothing with him he sets off alone along the banks of the river Po and comes across a rundown shack by the water's edge, which he moves into without a second thought. Installed in his new dwelling, he starts to hear the stories of his new friends from the nearby settlement, a colourful bunch of people who have lost their homes. He begins to instil confidence, he shares their simple life and also becomes their adviser, without his neighbours knowing who he is. In this atmosphere of spontaneous harmony, even the surreal seems possible. The character of the professor was played by Israeli actor Raz Degan, a popular model who has also starred in commercials. angielski This film is largely a manifestation of Olmi's artistic and human nature, creating a more or less explicit constant in his films. This is primarily manifested in his humanistic characteristics, the search for beauty and humanity in the details and inconspicuous gestures of human life, and last but not least, his internal relationship with God, which has often brought him into conflict with the church in the past. In this story of a wayward academic, the conflict with the institutionalized form of faith and wisdom plays a primary role. However, I watched the film with great sadness because the aging giant Olmi did not show me anything above average in terms of plot or cinematic art. I did not find a single "beautiful" shot in the film, and the emotional/deep scenes are only that thanks to the emotional/uplifting/touching music, etc. Similarly, the characters are didactic and the whole film can actually be summarized with two quotes often associated with this film about books and one quote from Jaspers, which is as half-hearted as the author himself. Truly a shame. ()
