Sixteen-year-old Jonas fails his exams again but is convinced he can devote himself professionally to tennis as a back-up plan. He then proceeds to fail the national competition. Soon after, he meets 30-year-old Pierre, who is moved by his situation and who wants to help him. Free Student is an unpleasant counterculture affair about the end of youthful infatuation and the loss of positive ideals under the pressure of “adult” intellectual perversion that needs to destroy everything nice. Why would anyone even make such a film? Moreover, in such a TV-like, bland way, without rousing any sympathy for the suffering main character?
