Gelsomina (wspaniała Giulietta Masina) zostaje wykupiona od matki przez Zampano. Zajmuje miejsce swojej zmarłej siostry, by towarzyszyć siłaczowi w wędrownych pokazach. Zampano (Anthony Quinn) od początku podle traktuje lekko opóźnioną i wrażliwą dziewczynę. Mimo tego Gelsomina pomaga mu w występach. Zampano rozrywa łańcuchy a ona grą na werblu zabawia publiczność i zbiera pieniądze. Kiedy raz zgnębiona okrucieństwem mężczyzny ucieka, poznaje innego cyrkowego artystę – linoskoczka „Szalonego”. Ten próbuje ją przekonać do wspólnego życia. Poniżana i bita Gelsomina nie jest jednak w stanie wyrwać się spod przemożnego wpływu Zampano. Siłacz odnajduje ją i zabiera do małego cyrku, w którym z czasem pojawia się i linoskoczek. Nienawidzący się mężczyźni ranią się nożami i trafiają do więzienia. „Szalony” opuszcza je pierwszy i chce uciec z Gelsominą. Jednak Zampano również wychodzi na wolność... (Aurora)

The centre of the narrative is not Fellini's pictorial symbolism, but Giulietta Masina, an actress whose shy look full of moral innocence is worth a thousand words, and Anthony Quinn, a charismatic thunderbolt whose eccentric performance brings the viewer exactly to the emotions the situation demands. They make such an unforgettable couple, and their mutual differences become such a strong and narratively unifying bond, that master Fellini could just dryly react behind the camera this time and the tragic ending would still hit us in the back of the head with an unprecedented emotional load. The story this time is very basic and some of the philosophical motifs just stretch it unnecessarily, but in Fellini's rich filmography, full of challenging works of thought, The Road certainly doesn't get lost even after all these years, quite the opposite... 80%

There is probably little doubt that it is a good film, as well as that there are excellent actor performances. However, I can't help but feel that it's not something that would completely blow me away or leave me in awe. It is a great example of Fellini's ability to tell stories and at the same time, look at people in a way that we usually won't like.
