Tom (Martin Sheen) to amerykański lekarz, który nie może się pogodzić z tragiczną śmiercią syna. Daniel (Emilio Estevez) zginął w Pirenejach, pokonując Camino de Santiago, zwaną też Szlakiem Świętego Jakuba. Tom jedzie do Europy po szczątki syna. Na miejscu postanawia przejść cały szlak, od początku do końca, aby uczcić pamięć Daniela. To spore wyzwanie, droga jest bardzo długa, a Tom nie ma żadnego doświadczenia trekkingowego. Okazuje się, że nie będzie mierzył się z tym wyzwaniem sam. Dołącza do niego Holender Joost, później Kandyjka Sarah i irlandzki pisarz Jack. Każde z tej, pozornie niedopasowanej, przypadkowej gromadki jest na życiowym zakręcie, każde poszukuje motywacji do mierzenia się z niespodziankami, jakie niesie przewrotny los. (Cineman)

The Way is a relaxing road (walking) movie about discovering and getting to know not only new people and places, but especially oneself. The characters are a well-portrayed bunch of four trekkers from different parts of the world, with whom you’ll laugh during the good times and root for them when they’re down. Emilio Estevez’s direction is laid-back but targeted and accurate. And most of all, it feels like he’s personally involved. A small, positive film with an atmosphere similar to Alexander Payne’s Sideways.

Emilio Estevez proves that he is not only a quite capable actor but that he has a gift for writing a good story and eventually directing it. He quite cleverly cast his father, Martin Sheen, in the lead role, who shows that he is in a different league as an actor. And that's hardly saying anything. It's not about faith in God, it's about faith in ourselves and how we come to terms with our lives and what they bring.
