Zabiłem moją matkę to historia nastoletniego Huberta (Xavier Dolan), który po rozwodzie rodziców mieszka z matką (Anne Dorval). Od jakiegoś czasu matka i syn nie mogą się ze sobą porozumieć. Kolejne kłótnie prowadzą do coraz silniejszego poczucia rozczarowania. Z perspektywy chłopaka, matka nie nadaje się do roli rodzica. Jest niekonsekwentna i nie można na niej polegać. Hubert jest przekonany, że matka stale robi mu na złość, a wszelkie próby zbliżenia wykorzystuje by go upokorzyć. Matka natomiast wciąż pamięta syna jako małe, urocze dziecko i nie rozumie, dlaczego zaczął sprawiać kłopoty. Czuje się nieustannie krytykowana i jest bezradna wobec jego wybuchów złości. Kiedy przypadkiem odkrywa, że Hubert ma chłopaka, dociera do niej, że przestała już uczestniczyć w ważnych aspektach jego życia. Niegdyś bliska więź między nimi rozluźniła się. I had to think about this movie. Does everything really sound as it actually looks? Each of us has sometimes had the feeling of sending their mother to hell. Xavier Dolan expressed it in a film where he tries to express his rebellious opinions and I must say that it quite intrigued me. Xavier appears to be a very capable actor, screenwriter, and director. This film not only has an interesting idea, processed as Xavier feels, but it also has a series of strong scenes, underscored by excellent music and a perfect ending. The biggest problem lies in the characters that one must get used to. Xavier Dolan is not one of those who tries to please everyone, so different opinions about him come with time during the film. At first, I was fed up with him, but by the end, everything made sense. It must be added that Xavier wrote and directed everything at the age of 19.

This film was in terms of style and content very similar to Heartbeats, which is a year younger, in which Xavier Dolan also dealt with mutual human love, trying to define it and somehow delimit it. The verbal quarrels between son and mother were perhaps sometimes too spontaneous and unjustified, but on the other hand very realistically presented. We may hate our mother to the heights of heaven, but we will certainly never stop loving her, which is true in the other direction as well. The most beautiful and visually elegant sequence was the scene in which Hubert chases his mother in the meadow and in the woods. And the ending was very well done. In short, another very beautiful and profound experience, while the young age of the director/writer is still an incredible fact for me.
