Osią historii jest namiętna, ale i tragiczna miłość łącząca rozkapryszoną Scarlett O’Harę i czarującego Retta Butlera. Akcja filmu rozpoczyna się w latach 60. XIX wieku, tuż przed rozpoczęciem wojny secesyjnej. Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) jest córką bogatego plantatora. Wiedzie beztroskie życie na wsi, gdzie czas płynie na przyjemnościach. Scarlett zakochana jest w synu przyjaciela jej ojca, Ashleyu Wilkes (Leslie Howard), który jednak odrzuca jej miłość i poślubia Melanię Hamilton (Olivia de Havilland).
