The Hunter does not seek to be an outdoor adventure or a thriller. Willem Dafoe’s quest for a rare and almost surely extinct animal gradually gives way to a new storyline involving getting closer to a family that offers him a safe haven in this inhospitable place, and perhaps a promise of a new, more meaningful life. The film has a great atmosphere and is unpredictable, but it looks as if it’s unsure what is essential for its dramatic arc and message. In the end, it becomes a mildly philosophical, mildly existential and mildly ecological drama that misses the mark.

A fine drama about the hunt for the last Tasmanian tiger of its kind. A solid story, though it may seem rather watered down to some, and an excellent Willem Dafoe. Beautiful scenery.
