Our School

Our School is the story of relations between the Roma and the majority population of a small town in northern Romania. It follows the efforts of three Roma children as they strive to escape from the yoke of social segregation. Alin, Benjamin and Dana are sent from a dilapidated school in a decrepit part of the town to a normal school, where they try with varying degrees of success to fit in with other Romanians. The teachers do not know what to do with Alin, who is hyperactive. She doesn't get any support from her parents either, so she prefers to skip class instead of going to school. Benjamin is a little bit slow. He succeeds in making friends with his Romanian peers and consequently he tries to keep up with lessons at all costs. Dana is one of the best students, but she quits school because of marriage and motherhood. Their stories show that, in a poor neighbourhood with a suspicious majority population, your chances of changing your life are still very limited. (One World)
