Young Violetta and her mother Hannah are a peculiar couple. Ten-year-old Violetta lives a quiet life with her grandmother, while her mother Hannah is an unpredictable photographer who lives off of the generosity of others. When Hannah forces her daughter to pose as a model, Violetta finds her life with her loving grandmother turned upside down.The resulting pictures quickly become a sensation for the trendy 70's Paris art scene, and Violetta finds herself caught in between her new stature as an art muse and her dull childhood. At the beginning, it seemed pretty artsy to me to the point that I was saying to myself that I didn’t know whether I could handle such a wave of artsiness. The mother portrayed by Isabella Huppert pissed me off from the moment the movie started. But later I understood that she was supposed to piss me off because the things she did were pretty crazy and had a strong impact on the rest of the movie. After about 40 minutes, the movie shifts its focus from the artists onto the daughter of that crazy artist, who was portrayed brilliantly by Anamaria Vartolomei. Well and at that point, the gradation started and the movie went all the way, as French movies tend to do. The ending literally swept me off my feet so much that I’m still speechless. Finally, a good old French movie that takes only the best of French history. I tip my hat off to the director Eva Ionesco, for whom this movie was a directorial debut.
