Movie star Miyazaki Aoi (NANA) leads the cast of NHK's 47th Taiga drama Atsuhime. The 2008 50-episode historical epic revolves around the life and times of Miyazaki's eponymous heroine Princess Atsu or Tenshoin, the wife of shogun Tokugawa Iesada who is remembered in history for the great role she played protecting the Tokugawa clan during the Meiji Restoration. Atsuhime follows her life from her loving childhood and strongheaded adolescence in Satsuma to her entry into the Tokugawa court and rise to prominence. Based on Miyao Tomiko's novel, Atsuhime maintained over 20% viewership rating for its entire year-long run, making it the highest-rated Taiga drama of the 21st century. Atsuhime's star-studded extended cast of veterans and idols includes Horikita Maki, Tamaki Hiroshi, Eita, Matsuda Shota, Tomosaka Rie, Yo Kimiko, Okada Yoshinori, Kitaoji Kinya, and Sakai Masato.
