angielski The movie’s characters are a bunch of unconventional heroes with believable team chemistry, who do not take themselves too seriously and are played with gusto. Chris Pratt, whose star is on the rise, is a super cool guy, Zoe Saldana would be sexy in any color and Groot is too cute for words. The plot is a total cliché, but the relaxed mood of the film, which shows that nothing is meant seriously, makes that fact less grating. However, I was unpleasantly surprised by the lameness of most of the jokes. Hilarious, imaginative catchphrases with a lot of pop-culture references, were supposed to be the main attraction of the film, and there are almost none of those. Even Seth MacFarlane had more in his recent, rather inane A Million Ways to Die in the West. The crucial scene is foiled by Tyler Bates’ inability to compose an escalating melodic musical theme. The technical aspect is, however, perfect. ()

angielski The plot rides on the wave of traditional comic book clichés, there’s the die-hard bad guy who wants to wipe out the galaxy and a bunch of oddballs trying to stop him. But the ubiquitous self-deprecating humour takes this tale up a level of fun, as do a bunch of likeable characters who have each picked up an extra bucket of charisma and whose fates keep you interested. James Gunn has capitalized well on his Troma beginnings, and he handles the wisecracking bizarre characters with aplomb and with humor that doesn't feel awkward or hammy. And tell me, is it possible not to love a film in which the protagonist is willing to put his life on the line to save his beloved prehistoric Walkman? I myself once, many years ago, as a poor student, bought my first Walkman with the last money I had saved and was happy as a pig in shit, so I understand Chris Pratt's feelings :o) And it wasn't even  a gift from my mother. angielski Guardians of the Galaxy is terribly silly – a multifarious group of sociopaths race to find a silver orb in order to prevent cosmic genocide – but it’s also hard to resist. It is a heroic interplanetary adventure mixed with an ironic B-movie space opera that is nevertheless more serious and less bizarre than you would expect from a former Troma collaborator (Gunn is the co-author of the screenplay for Tromeo and Juliet and the book All I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger). ___ It’s rather unlikely that such a disparate group would come together, so we spend the whole film being persuaded that they can actually work together as a team. The development of the characters is limited to the transformation of hard-headed individualists into team players, which is skilfully incorporated into the main storyline – the plan has to be changed on the fly multiple times because the characters dumbly pursue their own objectives and complicate or delay the achievement of the main goal (Groot in prison, Drax on Knowhere). The film rather straightforwardly focuses on a group of outsiders being accepted by the system (which is dialectically represented by the peace-loving democratic planet Xandar and the Nova Corps military organisation), finding kindred spirits and becoming members of a notional new family (a large, live tree becomes its symbol in probably the most sentimental scene of the film). ___ However, it’s also essentially true that the deeper you go beneath the surface of the film, the more likely you are to be disappointed. The action scenes are spectacular, quite well arranged and sufficiently funny, but they don’t always serve the narrative. For example, the struggle after the first attempt to sell the orb didn’t have to happen at all or could have taken just a few tens of seconds and the impact on the main storyline would have been the same. Furthermore, the formula of “intergalactic terrorist wants to destroy/dominate the universe using a super-powerful artifact (which is nothing more than a MacGuffin)” is already rather worn out and the film doesn’t manage to overcome its clichéd nature quite as effectively as, for example, Iron Man 3 did.  ___ On the other hand, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a blockbuster that was such a joy to watch for its visual aspect alone – and often only for that. Whereas the plot, an Oedipal narrative in its most traditional form, is strikingly reminiscent of A New Hope (a young man growing up without his parents and whose father turns out to be a rather dark character is drawn into an adventure in which millions of lives are at stake) and cheap Star Wars imitations like Battle Beyond the Stars, The Ice Pirates and The Last Starfighter (whose posters obviously inspired the Guardians of the Galaxy poster), the visual creativity of the artists was clearly inspired by the kitschy scenography of the new Star Wars trilogy, the dark visions of H.R. Giger (a planet in a huge head) and the camp aesthetics of Flash Gordon. ___ In addition to the breathtaking visuals, which we can thoroughly enjoy thanks to the longer shots and the large number of deeply composed scenes and half-scenes (which, among other things, serve to illustrate the motif of team cohesion, or lack thereof), Guardians of the Galaxy is notable for its parallel targeting at multiple age groups. Unlike other self-conscious genre pastiches, it doesn’t offer greater pleasure only for those viewers who are familiar with the various fictional worlds (Star Trek, Godzilla, Django), but also for viewers who are familiar with various frames of reference, particularly the present day and the 1980s in this case. Quill represents this duality in the diegesis. On the one hand, he easily fits in among contemporary nerdy heroes with their own system of values that is not derived from authorities, who care more about their technological toys (Walkman, mask) than about living beings and are walking encyclopaedias of pop culture. On the other hand, Quill is also a child of the ’80s, which is evident not only in the objects on his instrument panel (an old cassette recorder, a troll doll, an ALF sticker), but also in most of the films that he quotes from (Footloose, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Howard the Duck). The music that he listens to (naturally on a Walkman from the ’80s), which his absent mother recorded for him and which repeatedly interferes with the development of the narrative, can also be understood as a reminder of the period of his childhood, i.e. the ‘80s. If the 1980s, understood as a period of return to conservative values, serve as a model for the hero’s actions and thinking, this is a variation on the formula of Back to the Future, in which the ’80s had to be “corrected” according to the model of the innocent 1950s. What is implied by all of today’s looking back to the values represented by Reagan’s America of the 1980s? I’d prefer to let others answer that, but I don’t have a very good feeling about it. 80% () (mniej) (więcej)

angielski Hit me over the head with an Orb, but this well-shot but desperately unimaginative action should have been saved by an unconventional group of superheroes, and yet they sprinkle the witty dialogue in there so stiffly that I wondered if I was in another galactic quadrant; or how important it is to have a solo act. angielski At first, I thought: another Marvel movie that’ll get lost in the mix. Then I read some enticing articles about it and slowly but surely, I was beginning to inconspicuously change my opinion of it. In the end, I was only truly convinced at the moment when I watched the movie at a cinema. This Marvel movie isn’t mediocre at all and most importantly, it’s different from all the other superheroes they keep shoving down our throats all the time. It takes place in space, it has a bunch of alien races, a talking raccoon and an overgrown tree. It’s fun, amusing and it has an amazing CGI that makes you feel like you’re in space with them. Plus, it offers Dave Bautista, a wrestler whose door to Hollywood was forever opened by this movie, in my opinion. And I’d love to see him again. All of these points are connected by originality and humor that has managed to tell this two-hour story with ease. And I wouldn’t have guessed that length at the cinema, not even after twenty minutes of contemplating. It was amazing! I’m just so pleasantly surprised and I can’t wait for the sequel. ()

angielski Guardians of the Galaxy take advantage of the fact that people love galactic soap operas and don’t worry about the rest, and it is given to them because they belong to the Marvel universe. In other words, one thing is not true of this film: it really is not subversive. The film always smirks slightly at the right time, but that doesn't change the fact that it takes full advantage of the potential of cosmic heroic sagas and Marvel hubs. Its humor is similarly superficial as the choice of 70's musical hits, but it works as a well-trodden galactic sitcom with excellent characters, and even in serious moments it seriously entices as a "superhero" spectacle (it got to me 2 times with the pure essence of heroic pathos, only to then laugh at myself along with the heroes). It's touchingly childish, yet very adult self-aware. And calculated to the last detail. When it comes to Marvel films, they simply know. Years ahead of the competition. [75%] ()

angielski An unforgivable waste of potential. The most entertaining (because it’s the most crackpot, most absurd and the biggest sneer at classic superhero team movies) Marvel squad movie whose wings have been clipped by being grafted onto the standard template of an endless stream of Marvel movies “putting our money only on the tried and tested"; this time dressed up as a space opera with shamefully unremarkable action. Although they should have chosen a rather more revolutionary approach to the material. Maybe some time in the future; maybe with that already cult character from the post-credits scene. ()

angielski I am Groot – and that's great. Complaints about the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy turned out to be just an "ordinary" Marvel movie can be attributed primarily to the extensive media massage all around, which deprived us of any surprises. It is difficult to imagine a stranger situation than when the main blue-black villain is faced with a group consisting of an 80s fanboy, an unfunny fighter, an unpredictable talking raccoon with a machine gun, and a tree in the foreground. And, of course, it's another pursuit of the devilish stone that can destroy everything. Because why not, when all the teams, villains, and artifacts successfully merge into one pile a few years later in the spectacle called Avengers: Infinity War. However, for now, the Guardians are struggling as a cohesive group with an incredibly positive song-filled soundtrack, shockingly self-assured direction by James Gunn, and an opulent finale that dazzles with every new idea, even in a relatively small space. I usually don't find pure space journeys particularly enjoyable, so this exception is all the sweeter. ()

angielski The comparison of film and a rollercoaster perfectly suits Marvel blockbusters. The standardised products from the shared workshop of the Marvel Studios and Disney divisions attract viewers with a spectacular ride, which is, however, constructed in a completely mechanical way. Just as fairground machines differ from each other in their effect on one’s emotions only in their scary murals, extravagant names and number of flashing lights, Guardians of the Galaxy is absolutely identical to, for example, Big Hero 6. The narrative construction and dramaturgy, i.e. the rails conveying the audience to the individual emotional hoops and loops, are exactly the same; they differ only in their particular twists and turns. This is most striking in the conclusion, when, immediately after the spectacular climax comes an emotional twist that transforms the given film into a tear-jerker. Distinctive directors are hired for Marvel flicks solely for marketing purposes in order to help create the impression that the individual films are different, but in practical terms, their contribution has the same weight as the authorship of carnies who paint unlicensed portraits of pop-culture icons on midway rides. angielski Okay, so at first I thought I'd just switch off and enjoy this popcorn movie. It was going well, but then I ran out of popcorn in the first half and started to focus more on the movie. The music was great, no question about it, so it gets a star for that. The other star is for a successful joke here and there, for some pretty good effects that look like every other Marvel movie or Michael Bay movie... Unfortunately, I got bored from the middle onwards, suddenly this Star Wars parody, which at times played at being more than a parody, lost the charm it had at the beginning. It was like I suddenly woke up from hypnosis. Even though it wasn't New York that was being destroyed, but a city that looked like an amusement park, it oozed American patriotism and the kind of stuff that makes my teeth ache. Of course, some people don't mind it, some people enjoy it and all that. But I'm a bit of a curmudgeon, and I just rolled my eyes for the last half hour. I went to the cinema expecting to be entertained (the ovation on FilmBooster really got me hooked), only to get the same thing I've gotten in other Marvel movies and other American movies where XY is being saved (XY = Earth, the USA, the president’s daughter, Beetle Baggins, ...), and I just wasn't entertained. Yup, my brain. I just didn't want to turn it off and be entertained. So we get a cynical raccoon, we get Prince Hardbody, we got the girl from Avatar, only painted green instead of blue, we got a tree who has the biggest heart out of all of them, and we got a tattooed typhoon who lost his family but found a friend. We've got such a cool crew that you're just guaranteed to have fun, of course!! ()

angielski A well-made, snack-size Marvel with several excellent and amazing moments. But the problem is how to introduce so many heroes and still have time for the villains, Ronan therefore comes across as some random diabolic figure who must be defeated for some reason. The good guys are given ample room. Peter Quill as the nice over-grown kid, who beats up a boat full of swines not so much using his fists, but his wily intelligence, is an interesting combination of Han Solo and Tony Stark thanks to Pratt excellent delivery. Zoe does a good tough girl with a kind heart and Bautista’s Drax has unexpectedly become the source of numerous infantile jokes. Diesel’s Groot is the heart of the movie and soon became the darling of the audience, even more than Rocket, the talking raccoon with the rocket launcher who, in psychological terms, is the most thoroughly illustrated hero of the entire movie and his fate interests me the most. A real character. As for the plot, it jumps from place to place, higgledy-piggledy, so that only the most ardent Marvel fan can orient himself in the significance of the planets and the impact on the whole of space. You don’t need to think, just to have fun. Gunn managed to create a great movie to introduce an unusual team. I need his prosthetic leg. ()

angielski This is a load of crap. The recent 50 years of this team haven’t really gotten anyone out of their chairs. Either way, this is purely about the cuteness of Groot, the green girl Gamora, the songs and the catchphrases, and the raccoon and Star-Lord. But of course, it's cleverly connected to the whole MCU series, so maybe in retrospect, it fits with Infinity War like pieces of a puzzle, which is the main joke. ()

angielski The story is the traditionally Marvel stuff full of clichés, but the chemistry between the unconventional heroes is great, the wisecracks are good, and the irony is very self-aware. And when you also consider that Zoe Saldana delivers similarly uncompromising and beautiful action scenes like Scarlett Johansson in Captain America: Winter Soldier, you can't help but give a thumbs up. You may not admire the main heroes, but at least you root for them, and that's not something you see very often in the flood of all kinds of comic book adaptations in today's world. ()

angielski One is a raccoon, the other a tree, the third doesn't understand metaphors, the fourth is all green, the fifth is human, but definitely not ordinary and certainly not normal. The Marvel universe needed such a likeable group of heroes. And such a film too. I like Guardians of the Galaxy more than The Avengers - the films are adventurous, action-packed, funny and ironic, and they handle everything naturally. The playfulness and good mood just oozes from the film and I laughed more times than during the third Iron Man, the funniest Made in Marvel movie yet. The set design and special effects are stunning and every sci-fi fan must surely love it, because for example all the ships are absolutely beautiful, not to mention the planets. There are lots of references to comic books (I'd just like to point out that "the dog" is not really Laika, but Cosmo - Google it), to other films (Rocket and Groot are Han Solo and Chewbacca), and at the very end... No, I'll keep that to myself.___P.S. When I read in the credits that no raccoons or tree creatures were injured during the filming, I was relieved. ()

angielski Marvel strikes back. Marvel. Previous superhero adventures have already carried strong hints of the irrepressible truth of life that humour gets you the furthest and is also the most engaging, but only this bunch of "the biggest idiots in the galaxy" fully demonstrated the enormous potential that a little self-parody can hold. One wisecrack follows another, the five idiots couldn't be more diverse and likeable, and the story, though one big cliché about a threat to the galaxy, is more than adequate for the film's main purpose, which is to entertain. It's a shame that some of the funny moments feel forced and therefore unconvincing, and the last ten minutes are an even bigger shame, where the main villain, so ruthless and serious up to that point, unexpectedly proves to be an idiot and becomes the butt of the most forced joke of the whole film. But what the hell, we're the fucking guardians of the galaxy, we're funny, we're cute, we're articulate, we listen to eighties music, and if we mess up with someone, we send them a dick pick and everything is OK again. So let's be glad we have them, and look forward to the sequel about Donald Duck, who has a bloodthirsty space dog escape from his lab. That will be a lot of fun :D 80% ()

angielski Go for it. There are some great special effects, quite a bit of action, and you'll laugh a lot (in places where the filmmakers want you to). When you leave the cinema you'll fully feel you've had a good time for ten bucks. And it's got a great raccoon. I'm just kind of tired of Marvel managing to profile the target audience and doing exactly the same thing it always does. Plus, when we can't even rely on the death of important supporting characters anymore, and the obligatory action (which is visibly expensive here, but not particularly good) just serves as a transition between comic scenes, I'm really curious to know what the peak of the Marvel blockbuster will be. Btw, the credits for the movie list over 500 names, about a quarter of whom actually did something other than sit at a computer. ()

angielski Yes, it's popcorn fun, it's sometimes very simple and predictable, but it's just great entertainment and I had an incredible time. The movie, which I didn't expect to be art, gave me exactly what I hoped for. I did think for a moment that James Gunn might go a little off the rails, but Marvel wouldn't allow it. Actually, Disney... For me, the best comic book movie of the year. ()

angielski I’m not too keen on Marvel movies, but this movie got me from the very first shot. Combining good humor with criminals who become superheroes, with a raccoon and a tree in the main roles - that just has to be entertaining. Especially during some really serious scenes, where you find yourself having to laugh because Groot just looked at you... This isn’t enough for the highest score because, as a wrote already, I’m not a fan of comic book movies, but the Guardians really are very well-done. I can’t fault the special effects - they obviously did a lot of work on them and they seem very realistic. A sequel is in the works and I’m going to make sure I see it. ()
