Money, fame and a knowledge of English. In India, these 3 factors play a huge role in how society judges an individual. English Vinglish is the story of a woman who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film is a light -hearted yet touching and transformational journey of Shashi. Circumstances make her determined to overcome this insecurity, master the language, teach the world a lesson on the way to becoming a self assured and confident woman. English Vinglish is exactly the kind of film that captures that magical "why we love Bollywood" aspect in every way. Plenty of tears, an unadulterated and precisely measured mixture of emotion, tenderness, love, humor, happiness, satisfaction, human dignity, and the answer to the meaning of life. And if there is only one set of eyes in the world, like coffee drops in a milky sky that could tell this story, then they are Sridevi's eyes. 100 years of Indian cinema, 70 years of Amitabh Bachchan.

This is how I imagine a successful romance. There's no unnecessary pushing here, there are funny moments, it's interesting in terms of acting, and it manages to connect with the characters. There's no clear direction, and the ending pleases you simply because it's a bit different from what would traditionally be in American films. A beautiful Indian film.
