Rok 2035. Więzień James Cole, w zamian za skrócenie kary, udaje się z tajną misją w podróż w czasie. Celem jest zebranie informacji na temat wirusa, który spowodował zagładę prawie całej ludzkości. Przetrwał jedynie jeden procent populacji, zmuszonej teraz do życia pod ziemią. Cole ma cofnąć się do 1996 r., w którym rozpoczęła się epidemia.
