Patagonia, rok 1960. Argentyńska rodzina dostaje w spadku piękny hotel nad jeziorem Nahuel Huapi. Jadąc tam, spotyka kulturalnego Niemca. Nieznajomy z łatwością nawiązuje z nimi kontakt i zostaje pierwszym zamożnym gościem pensjonatu. Swoją uwagę skupia na córce poznanego małżeństwa, która ma problemy ze wzrostem. Przedstawiając się jako specjalista od genetyki, oferuje swoją pomoc. Tak, z pozoru niewinnie, rozpoczyna się mrożące krew w żyłach spotkanie z potworem. Tajemniczym gościem okazuje się bowiem Josef Mengele - jeden z najbardziej poszukiwanych zbrodniarzy wojennych, "lekarz - śmierć" Oświęcimia. (Hagi)

Don’t expect a typical thriller. The German Doctor uses Argentinian film optics, i.e. silent and “empty”, without suspense or twists. Rather than a thriller, it’s a drama without a single tragedy that satisfies itself with mere suggestions. It’s not chilling and Mengele’s character is not scary: he looks like a more mysterious and attractive version of Franco Nero. Viewers will feel unsettled and experience some mild anger (caused by powerlessness and unfairness), but only after the film ends and they process it. Anyway, I’m glad that this unique subject has finally been made into a film and I am curious about the (very likely) American remake. I know I keep repeating myself, but once again, I’d like to see David Fincher making this, in a nice old school-way à la Se7en.

Marathon Man, The Boys from Brazil, and now The German Doctor. Or an excellent chapter in the life of Dr. Josef Mengele on the run after 1949. Experiments with growth hormone, experiments on twins, and the fact that in 1960 he still had a "pleasant" 19 years of freedom ahead of him. The film features a great choice of Spanish-German dialogue and a parallel to the belief to create the perfect human and mechanical toy.
