In 1704, the Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was banished for mutiny to a lonely island in the Pacific, where he spent the next four years. He and his story were novelized by Daniel Defoe in the adventure story "Robinson Crusoe", and the island was also later given this name. For centuries, it was a hideout for pirates and adventurers, Spanish conquistadors and English buccaneers, who used the island to bury stolen gold, silver and jewels.
