Rok 1969. Chen Zhen, młody student z Pekinu, zostaje wysłany do Mongolii Wewnętrznej w celu przeprowadzenia badań na temat plemienia pasterzy - nomadów. Okazuje się, że Chen musi się wiele nauczyć o życiu w tej wielkiej, wrogiej i przyprawiającej o zawrót głowy krainie. O idei wspólnoty oraz o zamieszkującym step stworzeniu - czczonym, ale i wywołującym lęk - wilku. Chłopak, urzeczony złożoną i niemal mistyczną relacją między zwierzętami i pasterzami, łapie wilczka, aby go oswoić. Niestety zapada odgórna decyzja o konieczności wyeliminowania wilków z całego regionu. Odwieczna równowaga między ludźmi a wilkami staje pod znakiem zapytania. (Cineman)
