Turkish soap operas, watched on millions of television screens in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and other countries, have sparked a wave of divorce in the Muslim world. In the scripts written mostly by women, the main heroines are deliberately portrayed as strong and courageous individuals determined to fight for justice and their rights. Filmmaker Nina-Maria Pashalidou uses as example the lives of several loyal fans to show how the popularity of soap operas can inspire the emancipation of women and change attitudes and values in society.
