W cieniu słońca śledzi losy rodziny Breves, której syn Tonio (Rodrigo Santoro) ma przejąć dziedzictwo zemsty i bronić rodzinnego honoru. Gdy na jego drodze staje dwoje cyrkowców z wędrownej trupy, Tonio, zachęcony przez swojego młodszego brata Pacu (Ravi Ramos Lacerda), zaczyna wierzyć, w życie poza zaklętym kręgiem, który powoli niszczy jego bliskich. Jest rozdarty między synowskim obowiązkiem, a chęcią ucieczki w nowy dla niego świat, wypełniony miłością, namiętnością i nowym możliwościami. Po raz pierwszy w życiu Tonio zdobywa się na spontaniczność, odkrywa prawdziwy smak życia, a także przez niezwykły zakręt losu, dowiaduje się, czym naprawdę jest braterska miłość. (SPI)

So this piece simply got me - with its camera and atmosphere, which resonated in me for a long time. A very slow film with minimal dialogues, where the story speaks through images of a landscape scorched by the sun, details capturing sweat on human faces or emotions that emanate from the characters' eyes. My second encounter with Walter Salles after his famous "Central Station". That guy really knows what he's doing. Overall impression: 95%. A tragic film about the inability to break free from nonsensical traditions and blind obedience to the patriarch of one's family.

A visually striking film about family togetherness and a blood feud from exotic Brazil that dragged on a bit too long for my taste. The obvious emotional message just didn't come through for me. I can't help but feel that it was a bit too much like a soap opera...

The camerawork is definitely charming. The only problem is that the camera basically showed pictures of people’s lives in Brazil in the early 20th century and completely shoved away the story that tried to get to the surface ... but in vain.
