angielski The film is based on the horror story "Berenice" (1835), written by Edgar Allan Poe. The claustrophobic story depicts the relationship between a reclusive young man, Aegeus (Eric Rohmer), and his cousin Berenice, who spend time together at their family estate. Aegeus, who often experiences paralyzing melancholy, is the complete opposite of the lively and energetic Berenice, yet a relationship similar to love develops between them. However, things become complicated when Berenice falls into a mysterious illness. /// Rohmer allows long passages from the literary source to be heard, and in this case, it can also be perceived as a positive aspect that throughout the entire film, we do not leave the oppressive atmosphere of the family estate - it certainly corresponds to the closed atmosphere of the original story and the mystery of the fictional world. However, I cannot help but have the retrospective thought that Rohmer was notably drawn to adapting TEXT in his historically second film (and the first for contemporary audiences, as his first film has not survived to this day), i.e., a flaw he never got rid of throughout his career, even though he later replaced foreign texts with his own.
