Opisy(1)

Documentary film about beer and Czech nation. Our aim is to portray Czech society from the perspective of the pint glass - filled with beer that, like the Czech nation, is full of self-confirming paradoxes. (oficjalny tekst dystrybutora)

angielski I will go right out and say that I’d expected something a bit different from this documentary. Getting to meet three people, who are all beer-loving weirdos, was interesting, but there were no emotions or at least more sophisticated opinions to be found in the movie. One of them is obviously an artist and a writer, who considers SAB Miller to be his personal nemesis and who everybody thinks is crazy, which he must be well aware of because of the way he looks. By the way, even I didn’t really understand his strict opinions about the South African company. I’ve also long thought Pilsner is an industrial slightly-above-average beer, but I guess that for all its glory there’s no other way to see it. But watching the guy take a sip and spit it out in front of the camera was a bit too much for me. The second guy is a brewer from Pilsner Urquell, who decides to start a brewery in the middle of Belarus. I do get that. What I don’t get is the awful graphic design of the brewery and the name Pilsen Brewery with an obvious reference to Bohemian Pilsner and Weissbier clearly written underneath that. I must add that I found no mentions of the brewery online and I found no information about SAB Miller interfering in any way. And that’s not to mention the fact that the documentary focused on the brewer’s older colleague, who was talking to the locals and who paid attention to them on a human level. As opposed to the brewer’s attitude to them. Well and the third guy – the butcher, was definitely my favorite. He’s simply trying to brew his own beer, which he makes in pots that he used to cook groats for his pigs. What I loved was his pure enthusiasm. That all of them drink ten beers every day is true as well, but that was not the point this time. In the end I must say it’s a pity that this documentary doesn’t present some deeper message. It simply presents three people’s exaggerated opinions on what Czech beer means to them. ()

angielski Honestly, I'm not sure if the documentary intrigued me or not, but it's definitely something that helps you understand Czech nature, what beer means to Czechs, or at least to some Czechs, and what they are willing to do for it. Honestly, what I liked the most was that there are people in the country who try it at home and genuinely want to be good at it. ()
