On March 5, 1953 Joseph Stalin died. As soon as the story appeared in the newspapers, more than 1.5 million mourners from all over the country made their way through the streets of Moscow to pay their last respects. Stalin's death was a momentous occasion and immediately triggered a murderous battle for power in the Kremlin. To the surprise of many, it was Nikita Khrushchev who ultimately triumphed in the battle to be Stalin's successor.
