On 22 June 1941 the German war Axis invades the Soviet Union. By the late autumn Sevastopol, a strategic port in the Crimea on the Black Sea, was the only objective not yet in Axis hands. The break out of war shatters the world of a young student, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, forcing her to join in the defiant defence of Sevastapol. Enlisting in the army and undertaking brief sniper training, Lyudmila soon finds herself on the front lines. It quickly becomes evident that Lyudmila is a natural-born sniper, exhibiting impressive skill and prowess, proving her immense value to the Red Army. Her 309 kills is a testament to her sniping marksmanship, making her the number one female sniper of WWII, beating the tallies of many of her male compatriots. (Arrow Films)

angielski Let’s compare Enemy at the Gates directed by a renowned European director with Battle for Sevastopol directed by an unknown Russian. The story is similar, situated during WWII, in fact with a rather epic character, but the difference is just huge, with way too much patriotism and pathos in the story, and on the other hand great action scenes. It is a shame. I do not know if I have a problem with Russian cinematography, but usually I came across a problem, not understanding. Although understanding was experienced as well. But not in this case. ()

angielski Except for some historical inaccuracies and a misleading title, I enjoyed the film. The battle scenes were quite realistic. Sometimes I could almost taste the dirt that the soldiers were either swallowing or being buried with. I was pleased that the Russian filmmakers were capable of self-criticism and showed that they can make a much better war film than Pearl Harbor or Fury. If it hadn't been for the unfortunate soundtrack which was really distracting at times, I would have given it five stars. ()
