The two-part docudrama tells the stories of the two fascinating explorers whose ships first circumnavigated the world, presented in a visually innovative style, with a mix of re-enactment and animation.
Two men – one aim: to sail around the world. Their adventures tell stories about fame, power and influence, and above all about brutal world-political interests: Spain, Portugal and the British Kingdom, all major naval and colonial powers, locked in a struggle for supremacy in the New World. Sailors like Ferdinand Magellan and Sir Francis Drake are their spearheads; their success or failure will decide on the new world order. The films depict two present-day researchers as they seek to uncover the true purpose of Magellan's and Drake's expeditions. Their discoveries in archives, their interpretations of the sources and on-site research confirm that both navigators were not only adventurers, driven by their pure desire to be first around the world, but were also sent on their way on confidential missions from their sovereigns. Magellan was tasked with finding the shortest way to the Spice Islands, and Drake was sent to discover the legendary Northwest Passage. Keeping these missions secret was a major priority for their sovereigns; only now have scientists discovered how documents were manipulated to cover the real aim of the expeditions, which was nothing less than world domination.
