If this had been made as just one movie, where the first part were significantly shortened down and slipped into the second part as flashbacks, it would have been much better. This way, the first half (that is as long a regular main feature!) is rather mundane, static, with no tension at all and slow-moving, while the second half is the exact opposite: fraught, riveting and chilling.
