Akcja rozgrywa się w roku 2045, kiedy to świat znajduje się na skraju upadku i pogrążenia się w chaosie. Ludzie znajdują ratunek w Oazie, ekspansywnym uniwersum rzeczywistości wirtualnej stworzonym przez błyskotliwego ekscentryka Jamesa Hallidaya (Mark Rylance). Przed śmiercią Halliday postanawia przekazać swoją niewyobrażalną fortunę pierwszej osobie, która odnajdzie cyfrowe „wielkanocne jajko” ukryte gdzieś w Oazie. Rozpoczyna się rywalizacja, która wkrótce ogarnia cały świat.
