There is a perception that what comes out of the human body should not go back inside. The initial shot of the short film Fecal Matters may disturb or shock some people: it shows human faeces inside a blender. Eventually, it is revealed that this scene is a part of a medical treatment called faecal microbiota transplantation, which is the process of transplanting a concentrated faecal solution from a healthy individual into an ill recipient. According to some research, the transplantation has a positive impact on patients with metabolic or nutritional diseases, as well as on patients with mental or cardiovascular illnesses. The aim of this treatment is to increase the diversity of the fauna in the digestive tract, which is negatively affected by excessive use of antibiotics. As shown by the example of a successfully treated patient, the doctors and researchers featured in this documentary claim that this treatment has big potential in the future of medicine.
