The final episode doesn’t look at all like the last. There are many things left unexplained, or at most only in hints. The final battle is imaginative in terms of direction, but not technically proficient, lacking the budget that would have ensured a proper epic.

After feeling a bit on the fence with the last couple of episodes, the first season finale really turned things around for me. The Battle of Sodden, a mere "hearsay" event in the book, was brought to life in such a satisfying way. The creators took the opportunity to expand on it, and boy, did they deliver. It was a real treat to watch.
