Since her mother's tragic death, Marthe has lived with her aunt. But her aunt takes advantage of the girl's talents as healer and midwife to make money. She sends Marthe to the court of the Count, whose wife is in the painful throes of childbirth. Marthe quickly realizes mother and child are doomed. She flees in order to escape the Count's wrath, joining and trek of settlers, led by the knight Sir Christian, who is fascinated by Marthe. As they build their new settlement, Sir Christian has to follow his liege, into battle against Henry the Lion. But it's not just the war that Marthe and Christian have to worry about.
