After several years away, Rok Osterberg returns home to take charge of an investigation into his brother Maks's death. It soon becomes evident that Maks had been involved in the black market, and no one is interested in solving the case. As the investigation proceeds, Rok is confronted with his past and the ubiquitous fight for power between the local mafia and provincial politicians while the police stand, helpless, in the background. A Slovenian mafia movie that feels about 25% longer than it actually is, but it remains entertaining with good dialogue and an engaging tangle of well-cast gangsters. Everyone is crazy and betrays each other, but the worst are the corrupt politicians and the city with a smoking factory right in the middle. The film maintains a cynical and wannabe cool mood (the protagonist is also crazy, but “has his heart in the right place”). The languidness of the narration, which might put some viewers off, is part of the director’s game. This is the Balkans, not Scorsese’s New York.
