On December 12, 1969, a bomb exploded at a bank headquarters in Piazza Fontana, Milan. 17 people died and nearly a hundred others were injured. The police arrested a number of anarchist suspects, one of whom, Giuseppe Pinelli, died after falling from a window at the police station while being interrogated. The police claimed it was a suicide, whereas as many on the left considered it a murder, but the matter was left unresolved (the incident was the inspiration for Dario Fo's play "Accidental Death of an Anarchist"). A few years later, members of a far-right fascist organization were officially accused of the bombing, but no guilty verdict was ever obtained. Between 1970 and 1972, members of the extra-parliamentary left organization Lotta Continua collaborated with Pier Paolo Pasolini on a film investigation of the Piazza Fontana massacre and Pinelli's mysterious death.
