Viktor Taransky (Al Pacino) is a washed-up director. The beautiful Nicola (Winona Ryder), has just walked off the set of his last film, and the head of the studio--who also happens to be his ex-wife (Catherine Keener)--has just cancelled his contract. Just as a virtually hopeless Taransky is left wondering what is wrong with Hollywood, inventor Hank Aleno (Elias Koteas) presents him with a bombshell: a virtual actress. Created from computer code, Hank's invention--deemed S1M0NE from the abbreviated Simulation 1 and morphed into Simone for the masses--is beautiful, talented, and breathtakingly real. Soon, Taransky is editing Simone's image into his films and creating masterpieces. He devises elaborate schemes to make Simone appear to be human, all the while masterminding her every move. As Simone becomes an international superstar, a bewildered Taransky is left to wonder how real Simone actually is and how much power she has over him. But his attempts to sabotage her career only drag him further into the media frenzy that his creation attracts. (oficjalny tekst dystrybutora)

angielski Pleasant comedy that plays with a clever mystification idea and actually stems from possibilities that today's technology either provides or will provide in the near future. Well-cast with good performances, Al Pacino can't act badly either. Overall impression: 80%. ()

angielski Perfect, funny, clever and relevant. The top-notch performances, especially by Al Pacino and Rachel Roberts, only underscore Andrew Niccol's directorial virtuosity. A great story and a great film. There’s nothing left to say. 100% ()

angielski Andrew Niccol is a moron. He comes up with an original premise and manages to pull out some interesting thoughts and ideas out of it, only to drown it in an unconvincing execution and an unnecessarily naive package. S1m0ne is not the first time he’s done this, and won’t be the last. The balance between allegoric, serious sci-fi and oddball comedy simply doesn’t work out. It’s decent in the details, but as whole, S1m0ne is just silly. A pity. ()
