Due to a miscarriage of justice, Viktor Norton was sentenced for one year for a crime Webber, known all over the world being a thief and swindler, had committed. Out of prison, he is wearing his only piece of clothing, his tail-coat, something he was wearing when he was caught. He is on his way to Monte Carlo, with Michel, a thief who has also just been released. His tail-coat helps him to be admitted without much difficulty to Hotel Excelsior, where he befriends some representatives of the nouveaux riches, the Duponts, a married couple and Marie, their daughter, whom Michel robs out of her necklace worth millions . The precious piece of jewellery is passed on to Sylvia Romain, a celebrated singer. In the meantime, Webber also turns up at the hotel. He is also after the same piece of jewellery. Viktor intervenes by informing the police. Webber is caught, and the necklace is returned to its original proprietor, while the singer is accompanied to the next place she is to perform in by Viktor, who is now in love with her.
