Rumunia rok 1937. W sanatorium położonym nad Morzem Czarnym przebywa chory na gruźlicę kości 20-letni Emanuel. Leży przykuty do łóżka, mimo tego stara się żyć w pełni, jak się tylko da, zachowując wciąż dobry humor. Jest wielbicielem poezji i filozofii, ale nie stroni od kłótni na tematy polityczne. Zakochuje się w Solange. Choć jego ciało gaśnie, umysł wciąż jest żywy i nie chce za nic w świecie się poddać. Czy taki moment w ogóle nastąpi? (Warsaw Film Festival)

141 minutes is way too much for a story of a boy who is lying on a bed in a Romanian sanatorium the whole movie and pretends to be in pain. On the other hand the director Radu Jude did a great and original job. The visual part is as good as Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. That comparison is really on point. There are many unforgettable statical scenes that focus on the main protagonist and somewhere in the background someone whines in pain, but I still felt that it all lacked some decent touch of absurdity that could soften the cruel pre-war satire. Still it was very good, interesting, original and imaginative. It was only after the end of the film that I found out that Max Blecher was an actual writer and the whole story gained more respect from me.
