W 1916 roku Michael Collins zorganizował tajny związek irlandzkich ochotników, który występował przeciwko brytyjskiej armii i policji. Bojownicy pojawiali się nagle, atakowali brytyjskich żołnierzy, a następnie znikali. Anglicy byli bezradni. Collins stał się militarnym geniuszem ruchu niepodległościowego, koszmarem Brytyjczyków i spełnieniem marzeń rodaków.
