Syn Ľudovíta (Roman Luknár) stracił życie w wyniku bezwzględnego neonazistowskiego ataku. Z powodu uchybień w słowackim ustawodawstwie napastnicy zostają szybko wypuszczeni na wolność, a zrozpaczony ojciec staje w obliczu niesprawiedliwości. Mężczyzna walczy z apatyczną policją oraz oportunistycznym wymiarem sprawiedliwości. Ľudovít musi pogodzić się też z wyrzutami sumienia, ponieważ nigdy nie udało mu się zbudować bliskiej relacji ze zmarłym synem. Im bardziej obwinia się o śmierć chłopaka, tym bardziej cierpią na tym jego relacje z żoną i młodszą córką. (HBO)

Apart from the final trial, which smacks of absurdity at times, By a Sharp Knife feels very realistic. Only it's all a bit tired. I can't shake the impression that a more talented and experienced director could have turned the strong subject into a truly worthwhile film. (65%)

A drama that draws the viewer in with its quite unsettling story inspired by actual event rather than with sophistication or the way it was executed (the screenwriter was more creative with the similar Slovak film Let There Be Light). The actors are well cast and turn in good performances. I see the film’s greatest weakness in the simplistically depicted court trial, which should be the climax of the film, both in terms of the story and emotionally. Still, it’s a very good thing that films are made about these events in Slovakia. This film will serve as an important witness for the next generation of Slovaks, when the country changes for the better. [3Kino Fest]
