The hot summer of 1944. For several weeks a small artillery unit under the command of a young lieutenant Motovilov has been defending a strategically important area on the right bank of the Dnieper. Day and night the German mortar battery shells the tiny patch of land. But one day Motovilov gets an unexpected leave. (Moscow International Film Festival)
