Szef NASA Dan Truman i jego zespół odkrywają, że w stronę Ziemi zmierza olbrzymia asteroida, powierzchnią równa Teksasowi. Jej zderzenie z planetą spowoduje zagładę. Truman pospiesznie opracowuje plan ocalenia. Jego koncepcja zakłada dotarcie do asteroidy promem kosmicznym i umieszczenie ładunków nuklearnych w wywierconych wcześniej otworach. Ich wybuch rozerwie asteroidę. Truman zwraca się o pomoc do Harry'ego Stampera, specjalisty w dziedzinie wiertnictwa. (TV Puls)
